A former aerospace engineer, Jack Huang now reigns as the pioneer in the sophisticated and cosmopolitan night life that now defines Old Town Pasadena. Starting off with the highly successful Wok n’ Roll, the restaurateur now owns some of the most talked about hot spots in Old Town, which include Villa Sorriso, at the western edge of Old Town, the new ixTapa at the eastern edge, and BarCelona right smack dab in the center of everything.
Jack Huang has obviously gotten the job of restaurateur down right. All three of his establishments have booked up tables during dinner, a line-up at the bars, and packed dance floors on the weekend. Each place is consistently filled with the smell of gourmet cuisine and music in the air that is guaranteed to get you on the dance floor.

Penelope’s is a garden cafe, book store and gallery that has been in business since 2001. Providing a homey setting, you can lunch in their beautifully landscaped garden, or take a seat by one of their inviting fireplaces and browse through their inventory of books they have for sale. Penelope’s features both new and used hardcovers and paperbacks, as well as a small selection of used magazines.
Bring your kids Saturday mornings at 10:15 for childrens’ story time, and browse among their interesting and eclectic selections of visual art, wood carvings, jewelry, ceramics, specialty foods, and skin care products, just to name a few. Those of you who were patrons of and miss La Canada’s former Tutor Cottage will feel right at home at Penelope’s.
Penelope’s features live entertainment every Saturday, as well as the occasional Friday, from 11:45 am to 2:45 pm. Its large indoor and outdoor dining areas provide the perfect atmosphere for that bridal, baby, or wedding shower.

Located at Lake Avenue and Del Mar in Pasadena, Hanabi Sushi Bar is a Pasadena Sushi restaurant that should be considered a hidden gem. Set behind Macy’s in the South Lake District, Hanabi is perfect place to grab a lunch amongst other business professionals and retail employees, or for a quaint, candle lit dinner. The menu seems to offer a broader palette of flavors when compared to typical traditional Japanese cuisine. The prices are in favor for those on a budget but the menu items are brought to you in the manner of a high end gourmet Japanese restaurant. Although Pasadena seems to provide an array of Japanese Sushi bars, but I highly recommend trying this place out.
